History

Approximately 35 years ago, computerized hydraulic iso-kinetic training equipment was introduced. This equipment could for the first time apply variable resistance training at the same high speeds used in performance. Even though iso-kinetic equipment driven by air and motorized resistance was already available, the hydraulic valve model allowed for faster speeds and significant improvement over motorized equipment in rehabilitation and training results. However, the hydraulic model relies heavily on computers, and computers at the time were too large and too expensive for most small rehabilitation and private trainers to afford. Therefore, the mass marketing of hydraulic equipment proved to be a difficult and high risk proposition.

Though clinical studies had shown the results of the hydraulic equipment to be superior, the marketing efforts of the motorized equipment were more effective, and the major professional sports teams and hospitals were saturated with the motorized product. The marketing emphasis of this product application was placed on rehabilitation of sports injuries and very little was known regarding the sports performance training applications.

There were a few attempts by various groups in the 90’s to try to move the equipment into sports performance training due to new clinical studies showing measurable performance results using the equipment. All of these efforts collapsed, however, due to faulty business plans, inadequate technology, and/or inefficient amounts of capital to make the equipment. It wasn’t until 1997 that Dr. Tommy Knox and Mark Boyer (owners of K.B. Edge, Inc) were introduced to the hydraulic computerized iso-kinetic equipment. With the continued evolution of the computer, they found that this equipment could now train the nervous system at speeds as high as 900 degrees per second, which was twice as fast as the motorized equipment previously used. With their many years of experience in performance training as trainers and athletes in the college and professional ranks, Dr. Knox and Mr. Boyer quickly realized that this equipment could add a distinct advantage to a well established and disciplined training program. Excitedly, they began to experiment with various training protocols for this new equipment to give the athlete a complete variable resistance training program that could be tailored to each sport and each position. After eight years and much hard work and perseverance, over hundreds of athletes have now trained through the OC Fast-Twitch program with outstanding results. Dr. Knox and Mr. Boyer and their staff have developed a training system that is now second-to-none in helping athletes get to the next level and give them THE EDGE they need to be the best they can be.
